Color study & the figure

Fridays 1 - 4 pm, jun 6 - Aug 15
Art Student’s League of Denver

Mixing flesh-tones can be a difficult skill to learn in painting the figure. In this class, you will be introduced to a series of rapid painting exercises (color studies) of the figure in a variety of environments and lighting conditions aimed at teaching you to identify and represent both the local color of flesh, as well as the light-key, or color of the light itself. By learning to discern the difference, "fleshtones" cease to be a concept, and become another ineffable abstraction of color, no different than any other.

Using a broad and chromatic palette, students will learn color in its full range by learning how to use a variety of pigments. Color theory and mixing exercises will be coupled with working from the live model to give students a robust knowledge to inform practical application. Students will be able to mix the colors of the human form in a variety of different lighting conditions, and have a more confident handling of color and pigments.

Long Pose Figure Painting

Saturdays 10 am - 1pm, jun 7 - jul 12
Art Student’s League of Denver

Students will learn a well paced, adaptive methodology toward painting the human figure as both an investigation into its form, and as a pictorial idea. With 6 weeks, students will have adequate time to develop their painting towards a formal resolution, the instructor working alongside students and demonstrating each stage of the process, covering the conceptual and the procedural. A main objective will be to learn to intelligently sequence the breakdown of visual information into simple parts that grow in complexity, and learn to accurately depict color relationships.

Ideal students for the course are those who have some experience drawing or painting the figure from life and are looking to push their skills to the next level. It's recommended you have taken at least 1 life drawing course, and have some familiarity with oils before taking this course.

Portrait Painting

wednesdays 6-9, jun 4 - jul 9
Art student’s League of Denver

This class explores painting the portrait from life. Students will learn a direct painting method for capturing the light and form of the head as well as a convincing likeness of the model. Usingu a direct painting approach, students will learn to quickly and accurately establish the gesture, shapes, and structures of the human head. Perspective, as well as basic anatomical landmarks will also be taught to further supplement observation with knowledge to inform mark making and sculptural awareness. Keeping a simple palette, this method will also build upon itself towards longer studies and projects.

Private Lessons

Open availability // in-person & online

Private lessons help you to hone the skills you want to develop under the guidance of an experienced professional.

Many of my private students are former art school graduates, or find themselves returning to art after raising a family or developing a career. They may have spent a few years taking classes and workshops, but they’re eager to get serious about their craft, but aren’t necessarily looking to make art a career or willing to enter a 4 year program. With private lessons, I’m able to tailor a unique curriculum to you and your goals, while providing the focused environment that you wont find at a community art center or in group classes.
