Portrait drawing: Planes of the head

This 3-hour portrait drawing workshop invites students to explore the structure and planes of the head. Through guided studies, we will learn how to establish a likeness by prioritizing larger forms over smaller details, and how to construct a portrait by understanding the relationships between the different regions of the face. The skills developed in this workshop will provide foundation for portrait drawing and painting, while also deepening students’ understanding of how light interacts with the form of the model.

Light & Form through portraiture

This course will guide participants through the development of a portrait drawing from a live model. Participants will be introduced to fundamental concepts of depicting light and form through the use of graphite and white chalk over toned paper. This emphasis on tonal values will underpin the subsequent exploration of three dimensional volume. The goal will be to capture the cranial structure and likeness of the model as well as a convincing light effect. As the class expands into the rendering of form, there will be careful consideration from optical impression to engage our visual perception with drawing in a sculptural sense.
