About US

Studio Metaxu exists to meet the expressed needs of artists in Denver for the highest quality education in the disciplines of painting and drawing, and the study of the human figure.

Metaxu comes from the Greek meaning “between.” Socrates said that Eros, or desire, is an in-between state the bridges the separation between man and the divine realm. By beholding the beauty of the visual world around us, we arouse eros and see beyond the material to the divine.

Studio Metaxu offers weekly classes in painting and drawing rooted in the classical tradition. In addition to workshops with guest instructors from around the country, the studio boasts a regular crowd of Denver locals for Open Figure Study - an uninstructed evening session for artists to be in community to study and draw from the human figure together.

Unsatisfied with his studies, he pursued classical training at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia where he graduated from their 4 year advanced fine art program. While there, he worked for and studied under world renowned painter Nelson Shanks as his last apprentice and studio assistant. Soukas also studied painting, drawing and sculpture at the Grand Central Atelier and The Boston School of Painting.

After his formal training in Philadelphia, Alexander moved to Colorado, where he has been a faculty member at the Art Student’s League of Denver for a decade. He has exhibited throughout the country including Abend Gallery, Stanek Gallery, Manitou Gallery in Santa Fe, the Union League of Philadelphia, and the Comcast Center.
